Dear colleagues and students,

As you all know, in the autumn of 2015 I announced the search for a new Associate Dean Research & Graduate Studies. That process is now complete and I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Maryam Tabrizian has agreed to take on this role as of May 1st, 2016 until the end of my mandate as Dean on May 31st, 2018. Maryam is a Full Professor with a cross appointment in the Faculty of Dentistry and the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Faculty of Medicine. She has been a very active and successful researcher with the Faculty since 2000 with many notable achievements in her field of bioengineering and beyond, including her leadership of the Centre for Biorecognition and Biosensors, roles on the advisory boards of national and provincial organisations such as MITACS and Nano-Quebec, FRSQ salary awards, multiple research grants and supervision of many graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Maryam will be engaging the Faculty’s research community in discussions on how to deal with the research funding, graduate student training and other research and graduate studies-related challenges we are all facing. I know you will all join me in welcoming Maryam into this important role.

At the same time I would like to again thank Dr. Marc McKee for his 17 years of service as Associate Dean. Apart from the individual successes in his own research program, Marc has overseen a transformation in the research and graduate studies work of the Faculty. During these 17 years, working with two Deans, his efforts have placed McGill Dentistry amongst the very best research-intensive dental schools worldwide in terms of grant dollars obtained, publications, number of graduate and postdoctoral fellows, staff and student prizes and awards, and national and international recognition. Thanks very much Marc for your enormous contribution to this transformation.

Paul Allison, Dean, Faculty of Dentistry, McGill University
